LeBron James has labeled the Indiana Pacers a dangerous team for the upcoming NBA season, pinning their hopes squarely on the health of All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton. The Pacers are coming off a narrow 114-112 preseason loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 13, but the focus remains on Haliburton's full return to the court.
James, now with the Philadelphia 76ers, shared his analysis on a recent podcast. He argued the Pacers' ceiling is directly tied to their point guard's physical condition and elite playmaking.
James didn't hold back his praise for Tyrese Haliburton. On the Mind the Game podcast with Steve Nash, he called Haliburton "one of my favorite people in the world" but quickly shifted to basketball.
"We know what we saw from the Pacers two years ago, and it was all predicated on his pace," James said. He highlighted Haliburton's ability to push the ball, make advanced passes, and attack the rim. That skill set, combined with his high basketball IQ, was the engine for Indiana's run to the 2025 NBA Finals.
The veteran star made it clear every opponent must be prepared. "Listen, nobody can move the needle like Tyrese Haliburton. He's the head of the snake," James stated. He concluded that if Haliburton is near his previous level, the Pacers will be in the championship conversation.
After a grueling 16-month recovery from a torn right Achilles tendon suffered in the 2025 Finals, followed by a severe case of shingles, Haliburton is finally at full strength. He declared himself ready at Pacers media day with characteristic confidence.
"I am healthy. I am 100%. There will be no restrictions," Haliburton said. "That is not news. There is no source. I am the source. I'm good. I'm ready to go for the year." He credited an "unbelievable amount of time" spent working to return to form.
Head coach Rick Carlisle confirmed the positive outlook. "At this point, it really appears that he has made a great recovery and a great return to play," Carlisle said. The team will still manage his minutes wisely but expects no major limitations.
Haliburton's preseason debut came on October 7 in a 123-112 win over Minnesota. He logged 16 minutes, posting 7 points, 6 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal.
The immediate focus is the final preseason tune-up. Indiana hosts the Milwaukee Bucks at home on October 16. After that, the real work begins as they aim to erase the memory of a difficult 19-win campaign last season.
The 2026-27 regular season opens on the road against the New Orleans Pelicans on October 21. The preseason has shown flashes, including the win over Minnesota and a close 119-117 loss to Atlanta on October 10. But consistency will be key.
With Haliburton directing the offense, the Pacers' pace-and-space system should return to its potent form. His health is the single biggest variable for a team desperate to climb the standings. The entire organization believes a major bounce-back is within reach if their star point guard stays on the floor.
