The Indiana Pacers have added veteran wing Kelly Oubre Jr. On a two-year deal, a move the player says aligns perfectly with his desire to play fast-paced basketball. This signing comes as the Pacers look to address recent struggles, having lost four of their last five games, including a 121-133 defeat to the Detroit Pistons on April 12. Oubre, who spent last season with the Philadelphia 76ers averaging 14.1 points and 5.0 rebounds, was officially unveiled as training camp began.
Oubre pointed directly to the team's style of play as the main reason for his decision. He said the Pacers' system under head coach Rick Carlisle checked every box for him. "Fast-paced, little flare, and they have a great system in place, a great coach in coach Carlisle," Oubre stated. After playing in a slower half-court attack with the 76ers, the chance to run in transition with Indiana was a major draw. The 6-foot-8 forward insisted he still has a lot to give at age 31 and believes his brand of basketball fits what the Pacers do.
He also highlighted the existing structure in Indiana. The team's deep playoff run two seasons ago established a clear identity. Oubre arrives knowing his role will be as a complementary piece alongside stars like Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam. He has experience both as a starter and a reserve across several NBA stops, and he expressed comfort with whatever role is needed. The contract is fully guaranteed for about $17 million over two seasons, a deal that used part of the Pacers' mid-level exception and pushed the franchise over the luxury-tax line.
Front office officials targeted wing depth as a priority this offseason. Oubre provides length, defensive activity, and a scoring threat that doesn't require constant ball possession. He is expected to compete for minutes immediately alongside players like Aaron Nesmith. His ability to generate steals and finish in open court should mesh well with Carlisle's up-tempo philosophy. How many minutes he earns will be determined during training camp and the early regular-season schedule.
The need for a boost is evident looking at recent results. The Pacers' form shows just one win in their last five outings (LLWLL). Following the loss to Detroit, they also fell 94-105 to the Philadelphia 76ers on April 10. Their lone recent victory was a 123-94 road win against the Brooklyn Nets on April 9.
Initial reports from camp have been positive. Head coach Rick Carlisle praised Oubre's early impact. "He had a great day today. He had a large impact on practice today at both ends," Carlisle told reporters. He specifically noted Oubre's shooting, defensive toughness, and competitive edge, calling it "exactly what we need." This early feedback suggests the fit is as straightforward as Oubre hoped when conversations with the Pacers began.
For a player who has changed teams multiple times, finding the right situation was important. The Pacers get an experienced two-way wing who wants to run. Oubre gets a chance to play the style of basketball that still excites him. With the core of Haliburton and Siakam in place, Oubre's addition aims to solidify the rotation and help reverse the team's recent slide. His performance will be one of the key storylines to watch as the new season approaches.
